Mukilteo to Host Domestic Violence Prevention Forum

The City of Mukilteo will host a “Domestic Violence Prevention Forum” on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Mukilteo City Hall. Dr. Dale Todd, Director of Education and Prevention at Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County (DVS) and Jenny Wieland, Domestic Violence Prevention Educator for DVS, will be the guest speakers to discuss domestic violence abuse and prevention with the community.

“Our crime reports show that on average, more than one person a week is arrested in domestic violence incidents. That is more than twice as many arrests as we see for DUI, with far less attention from the media or public. We can prevent domestic violence by working together,” said Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson. “This is such an important conversation, so that we can be educated and learn to recognize the warning signs of unhealthy relationships and prevent violence before it starts.”

On average, nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute in the United States. Recent data suggests that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some sort of domestic violence. The City of Mukilteo has taken steps in recent years to reduce the incidence of domestic violence, including adding a Domestic Violence Coordinator to help victims access support services and escape abusive situations.

“Unfortunately, many of our police calls for service are domestic violence related. In some cases these situations had warning signs that could have prevented the relationship from escalating into violent physical altercations,” said Mukilteo Police Chief Cheol Kang. “I am pleased that the City has organized this forum to educate the community on this important issue.”

This event is organized by the City in its continued effort to highlight health and safety issues for families in Mukilteo. The event is part of Mayor Jennifer Gregerson’s Action Agenda priority to reduce violence and promote healthy behaviors within the community.
