Mukilteo Seeks Community Input on Comprehensive Plan Update

As part of our Comprehensive Plan update, the City of Mukilteo is seeking input on how Mukilteo should balance assigned growth targets and new state housing requirements with protecting our city’s character and the features of our neighborhoods we love. A new survey titled Housing and Neighborhoods will be open until October 6, 2023.

In 2021, the City began a conversation around housing which concluded with the adoption of a Housing Action Plan and an advisory vote where 81.85% of voters voted against encouraging high-density housing in Mukilteo. Since that time, the Washington State Legislature passed HB1110, which requires cities of Mukilteo’s size to allow at least two dwelling units on all residential lots. This doesn’t mean that two units will be developed on every lot, but it does mean the City needs to allow duplexes and accessory dwelling units as outright permitted uses in all residential zones.

In addition, Mukilteo must plan for assigned growth targets (2,146 new dwelling units over the next 20 years) and plan for housing options which are affordable to a range of incomes.

It is important to the City that our Comprehensive Plan update complies with new state laws while honoring the concerns about density that we heard during adoption of the Housing Action Plan and expressed by Mukilteans in the 2021 advisory vote.
