City of Mukilteo Hosts Teen Dating Abuse and Prevention Forum

The City of Mukilteo will host an “Teen Dating Abuse and Prevention Forum” on Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M.  The event will be held at Mukilteo City Hall, located at 11930 Cyrus Way, Mukilteo, Washington 98275.  Domestic Violence Coordinator Tiffany Krusey will be the guest speaker to discuss teen dating and abuse prevention with parents in the community.   Teen dating violence can be physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional and adults need to talk to teens early about the importance of developing healthy, respectful relationships.  Krusey will also be available to answer questions from the public.

A 2015 study of teen dating violence revealed that 1 in 10 teens admitted to being hit or intentionally physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend at least once.

Mayor Jennifer Gregerson said, “I am always concerned about the activities of our youth.  Teen dating can introduce unfamiliar challenges into their lives.  This forum is designed to educate parents on how to help their children recognize healthy relationships and resist bad ones.  The goal is to provide parents with important information that can be used during conversations with their children regarding teen dating.”

Police Chief Cheol Kang said, “Many teen domestic violence situations result from unhealthy relationships where early warning signs were not recognized.  This is an opportunity for parents to learn how to help their children identify and guard against potentially unhealthy relationships and avoid becoming a victim of domestic violence.”
