The Fire Chief is also the City's designated Emergency Management Coordinator and directs disaster planning and response.

Under the direction of a Shift Battalion Chief, the division provides fire suppression, basic and advanced emergency medical services, hazardous materials and technical rescue services to the City. Personnel participate in local and regional training to maintain skills and enhance the response to emergencies in conjunction with regional partners.
Prevention
Prevention is responsible for all prevention, training, safety, and community education efforts in the department. Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the division oversees fire safety inspections, public education programs, plans review, and special events planning. The Fire Marshal is responsible for the application of the fire code to new and existing structures.

Fire Watch
The Mukilteo Fire Department has prepared the Mukilteo Fire Department Fire Watch Form (PDF) to assist in clarifying the requirements and responsibilities of maintaining continuous and systemic surveillance of a building.
Fire Watch Requirements
A fire will be required to be maintained whenever a fire alarm system and/or sprinkler system has been identified as either in "trouble" status or the system has been shut down. The fire code specifically requires that fire alarms and sprinkler systems be maintained as they were installed for protection of human lives and to minimize property damage in the event of a fire (NFPA 72 and NFPA 101).
