The City of Mukilteo would like to remind residents that it is illegal to sell, use, transfer, discharge, ignite or explode any fireworks within City limits, especially in city parks (MMC 9.60.070). The City encourages residents to participate in a regional public fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.
“Fireworks are dangerous, especially around children,” said Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson. “Every year, we hear stories of young children being seriously injured by firecrackers. It really doesn’t need to happen, and I hope our residents will instead attend a public fireworks display instead of setting off their own.”
“It is illegal to discharge fireworks within the City,” according to Fire Chief Chris Alexander. “Each year, our crews are very busy responding to emergency calls related to burns or eye injuries resulting from fireworks. This year promises to be warmer and drier, which will increase the number of fires requiring response. With July 4th on Thursday this year, the long, warm weekend will be a busy time for our crews.”
There are several public fireworks displays taking place throughout the Puget Sound region, a few local shows that residents are encouraged to participate in are:
- Edmonds: An Edmonds Kind of 4th, fireworks show at 10:00pm
- Everett: Thunder on the Bay Fireworks, show at 10:00pm, Legion Memorial Park Lawn, 145 Alverson Blvd.
- Kenmore: 4th of July Fireworks Show, show at 10:00pm, Log Boom Park, 17415 61st Avenue NE
- Seattle: Seafair Summer 4th, fireworks show at 10:15pm, Gas Works Park
Illegal sale, use or discharge of fireworks is a misdemeanor and violators are subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail. To report illegal fireworks, call the new non-emergency phone number: (425) 407-3999 instead of 9-1-1. However, dial 9-1-1 in case of injury or fire or any other emergency.
