Mukilteo Police to Hold 4th Annual Youth Police Academy

The Mukilteo Police Department will hold its 4th annual Mukilteo Youth Police Academy at Kamiak High School from July 6 – 10, 2020 from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

During the week, the students will listen to teen skill building presentations while being introduced to public safety operations. Classes will include the do’s and do nots of teen dating and safe driving. These teens will also have the opportunity to be exposed to public safety career fields through practical application and interaction with public safety professionals who perform these duties every day. Highlights of the public safety presentations are a K-9 demonstration with Police Dog “Hobbs”, first aid and fire safety, a SWAT team presentation and a crime scene investigations exercise.

“I’m so pleased that young people in our community have this unique opportunity to explore careers in public safety while learning valuable safety tips and life skills,” said Mayor Jennifer Gregerson. “This is our fourth Youth Police Academy and reflects the City’s commitment to building stronger links between our Police Department and the community we serve.”

Chief Cheol Kang believes that many times a teen’s first contact with law enforcement is the result of criminality or police responding to a complaint involving teens. “Unfortunately, this creates an early negative perception of law enforcement and can make it difficult to build positive relationships later. The Mukilteo Youth Police Academy was designed to provide an environment that will promote early positive interactions with our young residents that will benefit them as they ascend into adulthood.”

The Mukilteo Police Department is accepting applications for students to participate in the 2020 Youth Police Academy. Graduation will be held on Friday, July 10 at Mukilteo City Hall with dinner and certificates of completion presented by Mayor Gregerson and Police Chief Kang. The application can be found on the City’s website at https://mukilteowa.gov/youth-academy-application/.

Kamiak High School is located at 10801 Harbour Pointe Blvd. in Mukilteo. Mukilteo City Hall is located at 11930 Cyrus Way in Mukilteo.
