Mukilteo Police Department Releases 2016 Annual Report

The Mukilteo Police Department’s 2016 Annual Report is the first year-end report presented to the Mayor, City Council and residents from Police Chief Cheol Kang, who was appointed Chief on January 3, 2017. “It is an honor to lead this fine group of professionals at the Mukilteo Police Department,” said Chief Kang.  “Our staff remained steadfast while dealing with the physical and emotional impacts also felt by the community after the Chennault Beach Shooting.  The success of this organization is a reflection of the great partnership we have forged with our community.”

“I am so proud of the achievements of the women and men in our Police Department,” said Mayor Jennifer Gregerson.  “The success of the Citizen’s Academy, new School Resource Officer and Domestic Violence Coordinator positions, National Night Out, and the happy statistic of a 32% reduction in property crimes demonstrates their commitment to our community and safety for all of us.”

Other highlights of 2016 include

  • Implementation of the online LexisNexis Community Crime Map for residents to look up crime statistics in their neighborhood
  • Officer Andy Illyn was awarded the Snohomish County Officer of the Year for his great work with “Target Zero Teams (TZT) DUI/Traffic Task Force”
  • Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS) logged over 2,000 volunteer hours, an increase of over 100% from the prior year
  • 18% increase in the number of criminal citations
  • No fatal traffic collisions in Mukilteo
  • Staffing shortages due to retirements, transfers, or promotions
  • Continued partnership with “Target Zero Teams DUI/Traffic Task Force” to address traffic safety
  • Valuable community education from the Park Ranger balanced with enforcement to the downtown/waterfront paid parking program
  • New part-time Domestic Violence Coordinator dealt with over 200 people affected by domestic violence
  • Increase in department training hours to over 2,900
