Important Updates to City of Mukilteo Online Privacy Policy

We value your privacy and want you to understand the choices and control you have over your information on our website, mukilteowa.gov.  To help you understand those choices and give you that control, today’s we’re announcing some changes to our Online Privacy Policy.

These changes take effect today, May 24, 2018, and we encourage you to review these updated Policies.  Here are some of the highlights of the changes:

  • GDPR: On May 25, a new European Union (EU) data protection law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), takes effect.  The GDPR gives individuals in the EU more control over how their data is used and places certain obligations on businesses that process information of those individuals.  We’ve updated our Privacy Policy to take these new regulations and requirement into account.
  • Transparency: We’ve provided more details about the information we collect and how we use that information. We’ve also explained your choices and the control you have over your information. We aren’t collecting more data than we did before, we’re being more specific about how we use the information we collect, how long we keep that data and the rights you have regarding it.
  • Functionality: You have the ability to ask us to download your personal data that we’ve collected and request deletion of this information from the website. You should understand that deletion of your personal data will prevent you from logging into our website, and may also prevent you from applying for a Boards or Commission position, pay for a recreation class or permit, or request service from our Public Works department. We need your data to provide those online services to you.

By continuing to use our website after May 24, 2018, you acknowledge our updated Online Privacy Policy and agree to the revisions. Feel free to contact us at comments@mukilteowa.gov if you have any questions.

Thank you for being a part of the City of Mukilteo web community!

Frequently Asked Questions about GDPR:

1. We don’t live in the EU. Why is it important to make these changes?

Answer: This new set of regulations standardize and modernize how individuals and organizations may use, store and eliminate personal data in Europe. While these regulations are not enforced directly in the United States, the City of Mukilteo is extending the EU’s regulations on personal data requirements to everyone and have updated our Online Privacy Policy to inform you about the personal information collected by us. In light of recent data breaches with Facebook, we are taking these extra steps for our users to rest assured that we take our responsibility of ensuring the safety and privacy of your data seriously.

2. What do I need to do?

Answer: There are no actions you need to take. The next time you visit our website at mukilteowa.gov, you may see a black ribbon on the top of your screen asking you if you consent to share your data with us, not consent or wish to review the Online Privacy Policy. We will track your response and take appropriate action.
