[ARCHIVED] Mukilteo Fire Department Welcomes New Therapy Dog, Amani, to Support First Responders’ Mental Health

The Mukilteo Fire Department is excited to announce the newest member of its team—Amani, a Bernedoodle, who is currently undergoing specialized training by the First Responder Therapy Dogs Organization to become a dedicated therapy dog for the Fire Department.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emergency Medical Services providers are 1.39 times more likely to die by suicide than the public. The Mukilteo Fire Department's therapy dog program, initiated under the leadership of Fire Chief Glen Albright, was established for two primary reasons. First, Amani will assist firefighters in managing work-related stress, trauma, and overstimulation. Second, Amani will play a key role in public fire safety education and community outreach, bringing comfort and joy to the community.

“We are thrilled to welcome Amani to our team,” said Fire Chief Albright. “Amani will play a crucial role in supporting the mental health of our firefighters, who dedicate their lives to protecting our community.”

Amani is handled by Mukilteo Fire Marshal, Derek Landis, and is already making a positive impact within the department. “Amani has quickly become a beloved part of our team,” said Fire Marshal Landis. “His presence brings a sense of calm and comfort that is invaluable in our high-stress environment.”

Therapy dogs like Amani are specially trained to support the emotional and mental well-being of first responders, who often face challenging and traumatic situations. Amani’s training is expected to be completed in 2025, after which he will be fully certified as a therapy dog.

The Mukilteo Fire Department invites the community to meet Amani during public events or when you see him around town. Amani will be at the September 3rd City Council Meeting, beginning at 6 PM, for the Suicide Prevention Month proclamation.
