The City of Mukilteo is looking at a range of improvements on 5th Street from Lincoln Avenue to the Everett city limit, which will benefit people walking, biking, driving, and using public transit in Old Town Mukilteo. The project has completed the conceptual planning efforts, early engagement efforts and will be completing final design in the summer of 2022.
Purpose
The project purpose is to;
1) Support active transportation such as walking and biking, and improve connections to businesses in Mukilteo;
2) Enhance and/or complement the character of the Old Town neighborhood;
3) Provide low-impact development (LID) water quality features that protect water quality and manage stormwater runoff.
This project builds off past City planning efforts and community requests for traffic calming and accessibility investments for a wide range of users along 5th Street. The proposed investments will improve pedestrian and biking access, calm traffic and meet the project goals.
The proposed improvements will:
- Calm traffic traveling on 5th Street through reduced lane widths, intersection treatments, improved illumination, and lane “meandering.”
- Have no impact to most existing private fences and retaining walls constructed within the public Right of Way.
- Retain the old town 5th Street aesthetics while removing existing accessibility roadblocks and enhance transit access.
- Have very minor roadway widening from the current roadway paved widths
- Install modern storm drainage treatment infrastructure

Needs
The need for the 5th Street Bike and Pedestrian Project is based on:
- Most basic of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, shoulders in some areas
- Demonstrated speeding in areas, need speed control measures
- Community interest in improving access to transit for all users
- Additional street lighting would improve pedestrian / bicycle use
- Aging pavement in need of resurfacing
Schedule
The City will begin outreach to property owners along 5th Street in the spring of 2022 to discuss the project work in more detail and coordinate access needs.
